Lawrence Tech and Specs@LTU

Since 1932

Lawrence Technological University

Lawrence Technological University was founded in 1932 with an approach that still guides its teaching today: combine theory with practice. Its first students could attend classes around their work schedules, making a college education possible while earning a living.

Today, LTU offers more than 100 programs on its Southfield campus, with about 3,000 students preparing for careers through classroom learning and practical experience. It’s also home to the Blue Devils, whose teams compete in the NAIA.

Lawrence Tech history

Since 1970

Specs@LTU

Before opening a school, Specs Howard made his career behind the microphone. In 1970, he left the airwaves to open the Specs Howard School of Broadcast Arts in Southfield, helping generations of students prepare for work in radio and television.

The school later expanded into digital media and graphic design, becoming the Specs Howard School of Media Arts. In 2021, it joined Lawrence Tech as Specs@LTU. Today, students continue that tradition of learning by doing through certificates in Broadcast Media Arts, Digital Media Arts and Graphic Media Arts, with options to continue into an LTU degree.
